Vertigo (1958)

If you like– Fight Club, Inception, Momento

Synopsis– A retired detective, Scottie Ferguson, takes one final case as a favor to an old friend.  The friend is worried about his wife, so Scottie tails her and becomes obsessed with this mysterious woman and her troubles.  This movie has so many twists and quirks that it’s difficult to sum up, but rest assured: it’ll disturb and surprise you. Director Alfred Hitchcock and star Jimmy Stewart are at their best in this cerebral thriller.

Why it’s better– In a time when special effects were in their infancy, Hitchcock manages to make these stunts, dream sequences and effects sufficiently trippy (although clearly dated) fifty years later.
