The Lady Eve (1941)

If you like- Wedding Crashers, Addicted to Love, 40 Year Old Virgin

Synopsis– The Lady Eve is for viewers that love the absurd.  The movie follows Charles Pike, heir to an ale empire, as he stumbles into the arms of a beautiful con artist (Barbara Stanwyck as “Jean Harrington”.)  He discovers her identity, foils her plans, and the lovely Jean vows revenge.

Why it’s better- Even though every step of the story is laughably unrealistic, you’ll find yourself empathizing with every crooked card sharp, well-meaning attendant, and, especially, the two protagonists. Henry Fonda and Barbara Stanwyck somehow come across as simultaneously charming and insane in this screwball comedy that, with Preston Sturges directing, makes every scene more ridiculous than the last.
