Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939)

If you like– Dave, The American President, Glory

Synopsis– A wholesome young scout master (Jimmy Stewart as “Jefferson Smith”) is ‘helped’ to a position in the US Senate by politicians who plan on using his wholesome reputation to their advantage.  Wide-eyed Jeff is crushed when his ideals of democracy are challenged and he discovers his role in the underhanded politics of Washington.

Why it’s better– Mr. Smith is the fifth most inspiring movie of all time, according to the American Film Institute.  If the filibuster scene doesn’t have you simultaneously crying and calling your local senator, I will be shocked. Also, Jean Arthur is just adorable.
