Woman of the Year (1942)

If you like– What Women Want, The Proposal, Shall We Dance?

Synopsis– Tess Harding (Katharine Hepburn) and Sam Craig (Spencer Tracy) both write for the same newspaper. Tess is a glamorous foreign corespondent, Sam is a humble sports writer, and both are blissfully ignorant of the other’s existence. Inevitably, however, Tess let’s a comment slip about the useless frivolity of baseball, and a literary battle ensues as Craig defends his beloved pastime. As soon as the two meet face-to-face, however, the film glides dangerously close to becoming predictable. Don’t fret though, dear reader– this movie, more than an average rom-com, is a biting commentary on the compromises marriage demands. Pretty surprising for the forties.

Why it’s better-This was the first of the Hepburn and Tracy movies– a pairing that would later become synonymous with the word “chemistry” and would spark a 30-year affair between the two actors. If you’re dying for more, check out “Adam’s Rib,” “State of the Union,” and “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner.”
