The Philadelphia Story (1940)

If you like- Bridget Jones’ Diary, Sweet Home Alabama, Moonstruck

Synopsis– Tracy Lord (Katharine Hepburn) is wealthy, beautiful, educated and about to be married. The only problem: a surprise visit from her ex-husband (Cary Grant) with two reporters in tow.  When Tracy finds that the reporters are blackmailing her family for an exclusive story on her high society wedding, the Lords band together to give their new friends a view of society they’ll never forget. Hepburn, Grant, and co-star Jimmy Stewart are stellar, but Tracy’s little sister Dinah steals several of the best scenes.

Why it’s better– This is the movie that saved Katharine Hepburn’s career. She made it a hit on Broadway, then bought the movie rights herself.  As always, she shines.
