The African Queen (1951)

If you like– Planet Earth, The English Patient, Valkyrie

Synopsis– After  her missionary brother is killed in a raid on their  village, “old maid” Rose (Katharine Hepburn) must find a way out of Africa and the terrors of burgeoning World War I.  Her path to safety emerges in the form of the grimy and often drunk riverboat captain (Humphrey Bogart) who delivers the mail and supplies to the village. The pair set out to escape Africa, but Rose’s sense of adventure and patriotism transform their escape route into a plan to blow up a German battleship.

Why it’s better– Everyone just works together.   Director John Huston was a long-time pal of Humphrey Bogart (in fact, Huston would give the eulogy at Bogart’s funeral.) The direction and acting are amazing, plus– it was Bogart’s only Oscar. Huston, Hepburn, and Bogart’s wife Lauren Bacall all adored being on location in the Congo, so Bogart, as he said, “just drank [his] scotch and griped.”
